New Moon in Gemini- Punarvasu & Mercury Retrograde
Our New Moon this month initiates a profound inner journey, arriving in Punarvasu nakshatra, closely conjunct Mercury Retrograde and coinciding with the beginning of Ashadha Gupta Navaratri—a convergence that invites deep inner transformation.
Unlike the more widely celebrated Navaratris, Ashadha Gupta Navaratri is considered a hidden or "secret" observance. It is traditionally devoted to intense inner spiritual practice rather than outer celebration. The Goddesses honored during these nine nights embody profound cosmic principles, esoteric wisdom, and the transformative power that dissolves ignorance and awakens higher consciousness.
Among them is the Wisdom Goddess Varahi, whose fierce compassion helps uproot the deepest impressions embedded within the mind. She exposes the unconscious patterns, fears, and conditioned identities that veil our true nature, inviting us to purify our inner world so that we may recognize who we truly are.
The New Moon itself occurs in Punarvasu nakshatra, with Mercury Retrograde closely accompanying it. Punarvasu spans the final degrees of Gemini and the early degrees of Cancer, symbolically bridging the realm of the thinking mind with the wisdom of the heart. One of my teachers often says that the longest journey we will ever make is the one from the head to the heart, despite how close those two places seem.
Known as the "Star of Renewal" or the "Return of the Light," Punarvasu is ruled by Aditi, the Great Mother—the infinite womb from which all life is born and continually restored. This nakshatra carries the power of regeneration, reminding us that life is always offering another opportunity to begin again.
Yet renewal is never simply about receiving something new. Every true beginning asks that something old be released. We cannot return to the light while continuing to cling to the stories, identities, and mental patterns that keep us bound to the past.
This theme is amplified by Mercury Retrograde. In the Vedic tradition, Budha (Mercury) governs not only communication but also perception, discernment, and the meanings we assign to our experiences. During his retrograde cycle, Mercury invites us to examine the unconscious narratives through which we interpret reality. Rather than merely revisiting old conversations or encountering external delays, we are being asked to recognize the internal patterns of thought that have quietly shaped our lives.
Together, Punarvasu, Mercury Retrograde, and Ashadha Gupta Navaratri create an exceptionally fertile field for inner transformation. This cycle may not always arrive through dramatic breakthroughs (though it can!), but also through subtle moments of recognition—realizing that a recurring anxiety no longer grips you, that an old relationship pattern has quietly dissolved, or that a story you've carried for years no longer feels true.
Perhaps that is the deepest invitation of this New Moon: to release the mental constructs that no longer reflect who you are, to allow a deeper truth to take root within the heart, and to begin again—not by becoming someone new, but by returning to the center of your own being, where your authentic nature has always been waiting.
✨It is a potent time to gather in order to dive deeper into the profundity of this next cycle! This coming Wednesday, July 15th @ 6pm PDT, I will be teaching a class; The Living Current: Mercury Retrograde, to share more about how we can utilize the highest qualities of Mercury to our benefit at this time… here is the link to join me! ✨
